<p>I was searching wordpress this morning on social media to see what others had to say and ran across a wonderful blog by Kevin B. Hawkins (<a href="http://kevinbhawkins.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/how-do-i-continuously-increase-my-following-on-twitter/#comment-9">http://kevinbhawkins.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/how-do-i-continuously-increase-my-following-on-twitter/#comment-9</a>) about how to increase your following on Twitter. I thought it was great advise on the problem many tweeters find, wasting valuable time with little audience.</p>
<p>I thought I would contribute and shed some light on the matter. <em>What I have comes from an expert on the subject, Joel Comm, an extremely witty, intelligent, personable man.</em> His book, &#8220;Twitter Power: How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet at a Time&#8221;, is a no-brainer tool for anyone who wants to increase their following on Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>Here are just a few tips from the book:</strong><br />
<strong>&#8220;Twitter Power: How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet at a Time&#8221;</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Joining Twitter: Choose a twitter <strong>username </strong>that you want to be able to brand. Usually that will be your name. As Comm says &#8220;If you pick a random username, you leave a valuable advantage on the table&#8221; (Comm 31)</li>
<li>Interesting enough, Comm suggests that before you follow anyone, add some jazz to your profile! One creative way he suggests to get around being limited by content is to create a<strong> background</strong> with a left side column with your picture, your logo, and some info about you and/or websites to refer people too. Also choose a picture that&#8217;s close up and professional for your main picture.<br />

<li><strong>One Line Bio:</strong> Comm suggests this outline: &#8220;[Professional Description 1], [Professional Description 2], [Professional Description 3], who likes to [personal description]&#8221; (Comm 40). Such as &#8220;Tree Surgeon, Garden Expert, and green-fingered designer who likes to smell freshly-cut grass&#8221;. Another approach Comm suggests it to &#8220;write a bio that discusses a particular project&#8221; (Comm 41).</li>
</ol>
<p>Skipping ahead (which you&#8217;ll want to go back and read all the tips on how to use your cell phone as well for Twitter), let&#8217;s go to the attracting an audience section:</p>
<ol>
<li>The most important thing: <strong>&#8220;Produce content that&#8217;s interesting, fun and <strong>valuable</strong>&#8221; </strong>(Comm 67)</li>
<li><strong>Create a network of experts:</strong> &#8220;It&#8217;s much more efficient to identify the key Twitterers on the topic and get them to follow you&#8221; (Comm 72). Do this by entering keywords and pull up tweets that contain a specific keyword and browse their profile for content. Follow them, retweet their information, but also send out your own advise. As Comm says &#8220;Give back more than you take&#8221; (Comm 75).</li>
<li><strong>Add people you know, not just the experts.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Run a Contest!</strong> Ask questions and offer a prize! &#8220;By running the contest live, through Twitter, it collects all of its customers together in one place at one time, turns them into a community and creates a party atmosphere too&#8221; (Comm 89).</li>

<strong>Don&#8217;t Spam</strong><br />
<strong>Follow the Rules:</strong> For ex. Don&#8217;t use all caps- looks like you&#8217;re yelling!<br />
<strong>Give Credit to Retweets<br />
Stick to 140 characters:</strong> Use links to a blog if you need more!<br />
<strong>Follow people who follow you<br />
(Add content! Add photos, link to articles, do contests, retweet, add personal tweets about your day, etc.)</strong></li>

<p>Well&#8230;</p>
<p>Lately my assistant and I have been attending many different webinars taught by experts in the social media world and the importance of marketing ourselves and our names online!</p>
<p>So I thought I&#8217;d share a little info with you!</p>
<p>One thing I&#8217;ve learned is to market your NAME not your business. This is how you brand your name and when people begin to know you and trust you as a person, they will begin to trust you as a business partner as well. Also, your name doesn&#8217;t change between jobs, and advertising your business on Facebook would come across as spam&#8230; and be annoying.</p>
<p>SO! Here is some ideas to get you started&#8230;</p>

here you can go through TONS of websites to see if your user name, aka Your Name, is taken and on what social websites!</a></p>
<p><strong>Second: </strong>You have to be on social sites to network, but it is also important to understand a little about each website and strategies for each! For example:</p>
<ul>
<li>Facebook:<br />
250 million users!<br />
Over 120 million log on at least once a day!<br />
Demographics: Mostly college educated<br />
Good For: Networking, building trust, attracting new clients</li>
<li>Twitter:<br />
About 6-10 million!<br />
Demographic: Mostly 33-44 year old professionals<br />
Good For: Getting the attention of &#8220;Big Dogs&#8221;, free advise, share advise, get noticed, etc.</li>
</ul>
<p>In other words, each type of site, whether it is twitter, facebook, or a blog, require different types of attention of different ways to brand yourself. Make sure you also go research all the ways to use each as a marketing tool! One great way is books, webinars, and just friends&#8217; advise.  One great book for marketing Twitter, for example, is &#8220;Twitter Power&#8221; by Joel Comm. Its amazing! Go grab a copy! Not to mention quite entertaining as he seems to be very witty!</p>
<p><strong>Third: </strong>Go start signing up! Use your name as the username! Get blogging, get tweeting, and facebooking (geeze, how many new adjectives can social media come up with?).</p>
